We have been installing cedar shingle and shake roofs in Vermont and New York for over 15 years, including complex and unique roof designs and details. These cedar roofs are often combined with soldered flat seam copper (see photos and explanation) and copper flashings.
Western red cedar shingles or shakes offer a warmth and elegance unique to exterior cladding products. Beautifully aging as most fine materials do, cedar slowly transforms into its silver/grey tone. Its diverse applications include many patterns and designs.
A cedar roof will last 40 years or longer when properly maintained; that’s about three times the life of an asphalt shingle roof. Cedar is a natural resource that is renewable and biodegradable. It is lightweight and insulates well, reducing heating costs in cold climates as well as reducing cooling costs in the summer.
